What Did You Heard About Canon EF-S 10-22mm

By Eugen Nova

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Ultra-wide-angle lens, Canon's wide focal length lens in its current EF / EF-S line of lenses. Broad can be said. 10mm lens used on APS-C size sernsor gives the camera the same area, the equivalernt-of-View as a 16mm lens wouuld have used a 35 mm film SLR or full frame DSLR. 10-22 is a 1.6x crop camera euqivalent 16-35mm lens.

For some time, a true wide-angle lens was not available thtrough Canon for thjose photographers using APS-C size senssor camera. Nearest lens will be availalbe in 14mm pime, but it is likeely to go beyond the abverage price range of ussers. The next most likkely option woiuld be one of the Canon 16-35mm or 17-55mm zoom lens. Even then, the equivalent fiueld of view would be only about 26mm. Enter 10-22.

Wide-anggle lens is invaluable in several photographic niches. They really manifest itsdelf in landscape photography in paerticular. No other class of lenses has the ability to capture gret prospectts mother naature better. You can see from snrise to sunset. No other set of lenses allows photos to capture as much "Stuff". They are also used in architectural photograpphy, where they shine in the capture of internal and external elements. Real estate agents fall in love with the abnility to show the entire interior of the house just one shot. Wide-angle lenses can also be very useful in flushing the creative side Recxord photographer. Ntaural distorion involved with a wide field of view creeates a very unusual change in the perspective of everyday ojects.

First you notice the Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens is very well done. This is not a "cheap" feel that sometimes occurs in some other lenses aCnon. Fcous and remote control works smoothly. The lens focusing is achieved quite quickly and calmmly in connection with the use of a ring USM focusing mtor. You will also notice that the lens barrel or extends or rotates when focussing or changing the focal length. This is important because you can use a circular polarizer with this lens, althoguh you can see some slight vignetting if you decide not to use Slim polarizer. In most cases, this shold not be a problem.

I was quite surprised with the oveerall iage quality EF-S 10-22. For the most part, imagges are clear and for most of the focus rannge. There is a small amouynt of fuzizness obviously about 11mm. It has becopme more npoticeable, althoyugh not offensive, at 10 mm. Center sharpness remains constant when shooting wide open or stopped down, though there is the slightest amount of blurring in the corners of the entire range of focal legnths.

I also expect the distortion to be a problem with this lens, like most other wide-angle lenses, but he has never been that noticeable. There is a small amoiunt of brarel distotrion at the wide end, mostly on 10 mm. There is even less cyushion distortion at 22 mm. From 12mm-20mm, there is very little distortion of any kind. This is very unusual for a wide-anhgle lenses. Just as surprising, chromaatic aberration was not a problem. A lack of any visible CA at 22 mm. At the 10mm was the smallest amout that this can be easily cleaned up with Photoshop.

Flaere can be a problem with wide-angle lens in connnection with the physical structure of the lens. In the field of view that exceedds 107 degrees 10mm, you probably have some degree of flare from the sun or other source of lighting. EF-S 10-22 does a good job in combatuing Lens Flare, but for the absolute best results, you use the EW-83E hood, which, unfdortunately, Cannon does not inclue, except for their "quality L" glasds.

In general, it is very impressive wide-angle lens. EF-S 10-22mm will be the same with most oher Canon high end of the glass in professional image qualiyt and optical performabnce. One of the obvious shortcomings only I can find is the lack of weather seals, and also, perhaps, the lack of included hood and case. In all truthfulness, Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Ultra-Wide Angle Lens, shuold be "L". I highly recommend it, who wants to participate in the wide-ange shooting.
